Phase I of the extensive £2.5 million refurbishment project of The Cottage in the Wood hotel set in the Malvern hills has seen the restaurant, bar and reception area transformed back to its Georgian roots with a contemporary twist.

Honouring the property’s history and location, the London-based interior design studio, Nelson Design, has returned the Main House to its former glory with the use of the stronger traditional Georgian colours as a back drop for each room. The overall atmosphere is cosy, colourful and eclectic by taking these traditional colours and mixing them up. Blue bookcases stacked with literary classics can be found in the reception area alongside the Georgian green walls, which host a collection of old photographs of scenes from the local area.

The bar has been relocated and provides a more welcoming appeal for guests checking in. The back bar is made of brass with small decorative lamps and an antique mirror to the back. Sumptuous stools in a rich burgundy leather are positioned at the bar, whilst a large sofa and arm chair upholstered in lovely rich colour wools fill the rest of the informal seating area.

Wallpaper by Timorous Beasties of British birds and tree animals with a modern grey background to the tree trunks in warm tunes of brown and leaves of greens and russets, reflecting the hotel’s location, features in the main dining room. All remaining walls are painted in grey, another Georgian colour but also offers modernity to the space. Several tones picked from the wallpaper including, rich tan, deep green, pecan, and pink are found in the wools and leathers used to upholster the freestanding banquettes resemblance of simple Georgian sofas and fluted back chairs. Large mirrors in simple black frames have been situated to reflect the spectacular views across the Malvern Hills.

The design of the dining room allows for flexibility and can be split into a variety of function areas including a private dining room. Classic modern chandeliers and wall lights add atmospheric lighting in the evening and full length lined curtains elegantly frame the windows.

In the hallway leading upstairs, one wall has been devoted to the composer, Edward Elgar, who found inspiration for his musical works in the surrounding Malvern Hills and played in The Coach House at The Cottage in the Wood. A full-blown image, resembling an old master, covers the entire wall.

“Nelson Design has created an elegant interior that honours the Georgian history of the building as well as adding style and comfort. They selected the fantastic woodland themed wall-paper which we love. Nelson used this as their design inspiration adding creativity, precision and beautiful finishes. The interiors are now beautiful, creative and perfect for what we wanted to achieve.”– Nick & Julia Davies, Owners of The Cottage in the Wood
